Tardigrades: foreign DNA

We wrote how badass tardigrades are before, but the information keeps coming. Do you even know what horizontal gene transfer is? Tardigrades not only know what it is, but also use it extensively: currently 17.5% of their genome is borrowed from other organisms, setting another record by water bears. More than that: bacteria, fungi, plant, whatever – DNA is DNA, as the old tardigrade saying states, so they borrow it from everything.

The publication in PNAS explains it in more detail, and there is a meta.com article. In short, apparently when water bears dry out, their genome may lose integrity, and then it gets ready to borrow missing parts from outside.
